On my design thread [link] user BMB uploaded the graphic used in the Bentusi projection within Homeworld 1 [link] It and Galaxy M51 do not line up.
Since that map is more canon to the Homeworld universe than the real-life map of M51, the Bentusi map trumps M51 and so M51 is NOT the Homeworld universe.
This is also a work-in-progress version of the map which was eventually completed and posted in my DA gallery.
I would have appreciated some recognition in your description given how much time I sunk into this.
Somewhere on Relic someone took the time to peer at the Bentusi map and compare it to M51 and found more differences than just the obvious ones (voids where there shouldn't be, groups of stars where there weren't any). This doesn't rule out the possibility that The Homeworld universe is M51 in the distant past (or distant future), but it was enough for me to scrap my efforts on map 2 and think about map 3. Dunno if it would appear someday or not.
